Story by Cullen Bunn
Art by Andy MacDonald
$3.99 – only $2.99 during its first week of release!
Salvage vessel Cortes tracks the Lonely Orphan, a planet with no star system to call its own. Somewhere on this hostile rock is a payload fit for a king. To attain it, though, the crew of the Cortes must brave razor rock, poisonous vapors, treacherous footing, and… the most mind-numbing horrors imaginable. Something nightmarish is at work on Lonely Orphan. Something cruel. Something hungry.

Why It’s Cool:
“Rogue Planet is one of those books that feels like you’ve seen it before: a sci fi crew out scavenging the galaxy to make ends meet, waking up out of cryo-sleep to find a forbidding alien planet with a salvage beacon screaming for attention. You know everything’s going to go wrong for this crew, but exactly how wrong is the question. But then Rogue Planet ratchets up the horror past expectations to something much bigger than just some dangerous aliens on a dangerous planet to something grotesque, something cosmic, and you know everything’s going to get much, much worse than you were already expecting it to.“

The new moon is a symbol for a new beginning, the perfect time to start something new and to plan your future — and that is what Nova Luna (lat. for new moon) is all about. In each round of this abstract tile-laying game, you have to plan your future anew, developing a new strategy to cope with what the moon wheel has to offer you.

On each turn, you have to decide which new tile from the moon wheel to place in front of you. Every new tile brings a new task you have to fulfill. In order to do so, you need to place tiles of the correct color adjacent to the task you want to complete, but these of course again bring you new tasks. Each time a task is solved, you may place one of your markers on it. So decide wisely and be the first one to place all your markers.

Toy Fair New Board Games!

New York Toy Fair was this past weekend, which brings not only a ton of cool toy announcements, but also new board games! Here is a couple of games that I, Adrian, am super excited for!

Players will work together to ruin the potions concocted by the legendary Sanderson sisters to save the lives of Salem’s children before the sun rises! Fans of the movie will recognize favorite spells, appearances by characters like Binx the cat and Billy Butcherson, and for an extra bonus, the game box is designed to look like none other than “Book.” The game includes plenty of other creepy details you love about the film, but the fantastical illustrations are tame enough for even your youngest gamers.

Marvel Villainous: Infinite Power is the newest game in the “Villainous” franchise. While Disney Villainous (and its many expansions) allow us to play as our favorite Disney villains, Marvel Villainous will allow 2-4 players to become popular Marvel villains, including Thanos, Hela, and Ultron.

In Marvel Villainous, each player will have their own goal to complete in order to win the game, but players can still interact by dealing “twists of fate” to the other villains.

New Games! 2/21/2020

Your Town Center is flourishing, but as the city grows, the need for emergency medical care grows with it. Fortunately, you and your business partners have the wherewithal to build a clinic to help those in need of more than first aid. You quickly get a pre-admissions facility built to help process and route the different cases into the appropriate queues. Unfortunately, just before groundbreaking, your differing views of the ideal clinic cause a schism between you, and you go your separate ways, with patients already lining up in pre-admissions. Each of you decides to build the clinic of your dreams, trying to hire doctors, nurses, and maintenance staff, and build new modules, specialized services, and even parking, in order to meet the needs of the patients ailing in pre-admissions.

This is your Clinic! Build it however you like to give patients the care they need, so you can make your Clinic the most popular one in town!

Play as trolls rebuilding your abandoned kingdom under the mountain in In the Hall of the Mountain King. With muscle and magic, you’ll unearth riches, dig out collapsed tunnels, and carve out great halls as you raise the toppled statues of your ancestors to their places of honor at the heart of the mountain. Gameplay is driven by the innovative cascading production system. Timing and tactics are key as you work to restore your home to its former glory and win the crown!

Working on the same game board with the other players (but beginning at your own entrance), you’ll dig a competing network of tunnels by spending increasingly valuable materials to lay polyomino tiles onto the map. You want to extend your tunnels to connect with buried gold and materials, with workshop locations that can transform resources, and especially with toppled statues. Statues are key to scoring, and you’ll spend carts to move them through the tunnels to prime scoring locations near the heart of the mountain.

A major aspect of the game is the cascading production. You begin with a line of four trolls, and every troll shows the combination of resources — gold, stone, iron, marble, carts, runes, and hammers — that it produces. When a new troll is hired, place it above two other trolls, forming a “pyramid”. The new troll activates, gaining its resources, and any trolls beneath it ALSO activate, gaining any resources that they have room to carry. In this way as you hire more trolls, you gain bigger and bigger windfalls of resources as the end of the game nears. The timing of your hiring turns versus your building turns is important as you try to maximize your cascades while making sure you get the trolls you want from the shared market and also stay competitive on the map.

The game ends shortly after the last player hires their sixth troll, then the player with the most honor (earned for digging tunnels of increasing quality, for excavating great halls, and for moving statues closer to the heart of the mountain, especially onto matching pedestals) is crowned the Mountain King and wins!

“Justin’s Jabber” – Back Issue Comics! 2/14/20

Well I hope you folks weren’t expecting some sort of Valentine’s themed post from me today in honor of the holiday.

The reasons for this decision are variegated, but the primary factor would have to be a distinct lack of key issues featuring romantic imagery in our recently arrived inventory.

I’m sure that if I did a little research I could come up with four different key issues featuring some romantic artwork on the cover, but I’m just going to go with some cool non-Valentine’s related comics. Sound good?

Happy Valentine’s Day by the way!

Young Avengers #1, first appearance of Kate Bishop, Eli Bradley, Iron Lad, Wiccan, & Hulkling, Near Mint Minus (9.2), $100.

New Games! 2/14/2020

Video Vortex is a competitive deck-building game for 2-4 players set in a radioactive future Earth inhabited by video-obsessed mutants. Each genre-worshiping character must strategically employ their individual mutant powers while battling opponents and navigating game effects in an attempt to seize control of the wasteland.

On their respective turns, players will spend energy to play special cards, power their deck with rentals from the local video store, and eject chosen cards from play to weaken foes. Runtime, the measure of mutant health, is limited and unique to each character. By advancing an opponent’s runtime beyond their limit through Lo-Fi and Hi-Fi attacks, mutants collect “Be Kind” tokens as trophies representative of their conquest. Once three distinctive trophies have been collected, victory is declared by the reigning champion.

In Trial by Trolley, one player acts as the Trolley Operator and must choose where to send a murderous, out of control, trolley. Every other player at the table plays cards and argues in order to convince the operator to spare their lives and condemn everyone on the other track to a gruesome death-by-trolley.

Each round, one player will act as the trolley conductor. This person will be the judge, and will choose which track the trolley will murder.

Each other player is divided evenly among teams, and each player(s) will have a role for the round.

To begin, one player will draw 3 angelic tracks, choose one to play to the table, and then randomly reveal a 2nd angelic track from the deck to add to the track. Another player will draw 3 demonic tracks, and choose to add one to the opposing teams track, attempting to sabotage them, and spare their own tracks. Finally, player(s) will draw track modifiers to place on any track card on the table. They can play on their own tracks, to sway the judge, or they may play on their opponents, to further sway the judge into murdering their opponent’s track.

The judge will ponder this conundrum, and eventually decide to murder one track. The track that was spared is the winner for the round!

Play continues for a number of rounds pre-determined by the number of players at the table.

Image Comics
Written by Johnnie Christmas
Illustrated by Jack Cole
SERIES PREMIERE! A new adventure series with all the sci-fi drama of Breaking Bad set in Mos Eisley! Promising young cadet Tilde is framed for crimes against the empire after discovering her mother was the ruthless warlord of the deadly colony Tartarus, a vital player in the galactic war. Now, Tilde’s only way home may be to reclaim her mother’s dark crown. #1 New York Times bestseller JOHNNIE CHRISTMAS (Alien 3) and artistic phenom JACK T. COLE (The Unsound) kick off this ongoing series with 44 big pages of story!

Why It’s Cool:
“Tartarus is one of those rare comics that just hums along perfectly, full of wild sci-fi ideas and characters that leap off the page fully realized. This oversized first issue does an excellent job of setting up the world of Tartarus, the characters and their conflicts, and the whole thing is beautifully captured by Jack Cole’s euro inspired style.  Pulling from a ton of other science fiction, yet uniquely it’s own thing, in Tartarus’ dense pages you’ll pick up elements of Star Wars and Akira, along with some Blade Runner and Moebius influence. Issue #2 can’t come soon enough.”
-Edward Uvanni, Comics Omnivore Director

Q&A with Johnnie Christmas:

Tell us a little bit about Tartarus. How did everything come together?

Johnnie Christmas: Back in 2015 I was turning over this seed of an idea, about an intergalactic warlord and her kid. And what would happen when an empire (who also employs the kid) finds out who she really is.
I was also thinking of working with another artist on the idea instead of drawing it myself. When I met Jack and saw his amazing art, I knew he was the perfect person to collaborate with.

What are you reading/watching/listening to as inspiration for this work?

JC: Star Wars trilogy is an obvious influence. But also Akira and Blade Runner are huge for us, the grungy run down feel of those worlds. Also reading lots of mythology, the Odyssey, even some ancient Mesopotamian stuff. Though our world is firmly rooted in sci-fi, mythology has been helpful as a framework, to lend an epic, mythic feel to our story.
As for music, while writing, I was listening to a lot of movie soundtracks and Classical. Dvorak’s New World symphony is a fave. While not writing, I was heavily into trap music at the time. Now that I think of it, I was also going through a Spanish Indie Pop period too, lots of Carla Morrison.

When you started this project who did you have in mind as an audience for this, and did it change by the time you finished?

JC: I always have my comic book, sci-fi loving friends in mind. That person in the shop on Wednesday talking excitedly about what comic they’re reading. Because depending on the Wednesday, I’m sometimes that guy. I like to know what people are reading and why, what’s capturing their imaginations, what’s tapping some area of interest in a new way. Or what’s just plain entertaining. That’s who I have in mind and it hasn’t changed.

Can you give us an idea of what readers can look forward to in this series, maybe a little down the line?

JC: Things get tougher and more interesting for Tilde and her friends as they go along. They learn that things aren’t exactly as they seem and that to survive they may have to do things they aren’t proud of. To borrow a phrase, “Expect the unexpected”.

What’s great in comics right now that you’re currently reading?

JC: Deadly Class and Outer Darkness continue to impress every issue. Consistent quality. I’m Digging Protector and I loved Little Bird. The Meghex series makes me laugh and The Hobtown Mystery Stories series is really great

What are you currently working on?

JC: I’m writing an OGN that should be announced soon. It’s a horror/romance about a young woman  who sees ghosts when she has too much caffeine. Some of which are extremely dangerous. Love, hungry ghosts and a haunted Brazilian coffee plantation. More on that soon…

New Games! 2/7/2020

The world’s first dodgeball card game. Collect cards. Play your hand. Throw things at your friends.

Throw Throw Burrito is what you get when you cross a card game with dodgeball. Try to collect matching sets of cards faster than your opponents while simultaneously ducking, dodging, and throwing squishy airborne burritos. The cards you collect earn points, but getting hit by flying burritos loses them. So clear some space and put away the antiques, because you’ve never played a card game quite like this before.

How it works: Place a pair of burritos on a table and draw cards. Keep your cards a secret. Rack up points by finding sets of three in the deck. Find matches before anyone else does. If someone plays Burrito Cards, a Battle ensues. Steal points from your opponents by hitting them with squishy toy burritos. Declare war on your friends. Some battles only involve a handful of players. Others force the entire table to engage in a Burrito War. Duel to determine the winner. During a Burrito Duel, two players must stand back to back, walk three paces, and FIRE.

From the creators of Exploding Kittens and Wolfgang Warsch (The Mind) comes a brand new family-friendly party game for people who are bad at charades

-Perform ridiculous and hilarious actions at different intensities
-Win points by matching your intensity with another player
-Includes 139 cards and 58 tokens
