“Justin’s Jabber” – Back Issue Comics! 9/21/19

Wonder Man is one of my favorite underappreciated titles of the 1990’s.

I think he was like a Hollywood stuntman or something, there was a wacky neighbor and everything.

Very 90’s cool. Read it while watching reruns of The X-Files. Pairs well with Crystal Pepsi.

Avengers #9, first appearance of Wonder Man, Very Good/Fine (5.0), $150.

New Games! 9/20/2019

UNMATCHED: BATTLE LEGENDS

In battle, there are no equals.

Unmatched is a highly asymmetrical miniature fighting game for two or four players. Each hero is represented by a unique deck designed to evoke their style and legend. Tactical movement and no-luck combat resolution create a unique play experience that rewards expertise, but just when you’ve mastered one set, new heroes arrive to provide all new match-ups.

Battle of Legends, Volume One features four heroes. King Arthur sacrifices cards to power up his attacks and gets some timely assistance from Merlin’s magic. Alice is back from Wonderland with a giant vorpal blade and the Jabberwock by her side as she grows and shrinks to gain advantages on attack and defense. Medusa is happy to attack from range and let her harpies hound you, but just one devastating glance could end the battle quickly. Sinbad grows in power as he gains experience on each of his voyages.

Combat is resolved quickly by comparing attack and defense cards. However, each card’s unique effects and a simple but deep timing system lead to interesting decisions each time. The game also features an updated version of the line-of-sight system from Tannhäuser for ranged attacks and area effects.

The game includes a double-sided board with two different battlefields, pre-washed miniatures for each hero, and custom life trackers that’s brought to life with the stunning artwork of Oliver Barrett and the combined design teams of Restoration Games and Mondo Games.

DRAGONSCALES

You are a formidable villain; your sinister conquests are innumerable. But there is one foe that even you cannot vanquish alone, Archerex, the lord of Dragons. A hoard of treasure beyond imagining waits to be claimed, and the scales of this dragon are more valuable than any amount of gold or gems! Will your loose alliance be able to take down Archerex, or will this great dragon’s rage consume you all?

Dragonscales is a game of villainy and treasure-grabbing where players are sinister villains, each with their own unique advantages, tactics, and style! Show your strength by slaying the dragon… while grabbing as much treasure as possible! Or maybe you will find an opportune moment and rush for the exit leaving your “allies” to be consumed by the dragon’s rage!

Designed by Richard Launius, Dragonscales, gives players multiple victory conditions to work towards while providing constant player interaction. Devise a devious strategy and set forth into the great dragon’s lair, pushing your luck against that of the other players as you strive to be the most formidable villain!

JUSTIN PONSOR MEMORIAL CHARITY EVENT!

Saturday, September 14th from 11am to 8pm

Justin Ponsor (“JPo”) was a world-class comic book colorist, and a friend to the Team here at Emerald City. He passed away in May after a two-year public battle with cancer.

“As anyone who ever met Justin Ponsor knew, he was never just a colleague or colorist or creative partner … he was family,” said Marvel Comics’ Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski in remembering Justin. “He embraced life with the biggest of hearts, the widest of smiles & the deepest of laughs. He made comics a better place. JPo’s loss will be felt forever.”

Justin was also a huge fan of tabletop gaming – especially the “Vs. System” 2 Player Card Game!
His friends and fellow players have created this celebration of Justin Ponsor’s life, work, and play in the form of a charity event, with proceeds going to THE HERO INITIATIVE!

This event will raise money for The Hero Initiative through auctions and a Vs. System 2PCG tournament!

Various people and organizations are donating items to this event! Contributors include:

  • Greg Land (comic book artist who worked with Justin on Uncanny X-Men) – signed prints!
  • Upper Deck Entertainment (publisher of the Vs. System 2PCG) – VS. Organized Play Kits, Vs. playmats, Vs. game cards, and Marvel Masterpieces trading cards!
  • CMON (“Cool Mini Or Not,” publisher of board & tabletop games)

9/4 – DIXIT

2010 Spiel des Jahres Winner

One player is the storyteller for the turn and looks at the images on the 6 cards in her hand. From one of these, she makes up a sentence and says it out loud (without showing the card to the other players).

Each other player selects the card in their hands which best matches the sentence and gives the selected card to the storyteller, without showing it to the others.

The storyteller shuffles her card with all the received cards. All pictures are shown face up and every player has to bet upon which picture was the storyteller’s.

If nobody or everybody finds the correct card, the storyteller scores 0, and each of the other players scores 2. Otherwise the storyteller and whoever found the correct answer score 3. Players score 1 point for every vote for their own card.

The game ends when the deck is empty or if a player scores 30 points. In either case, the player with the most points wins the game.

9/7 – MISSION: RED PLANET

With technology rapidly developing and the human population growing, Victorian-era Earth is in dire need of fuel, land, and other natural resources. Fortunately, automated probes sent to Mars have discovered celerium, an ore that can be combusted to produce ten thousand times more power than a steam engine, and sylvanite, the densest substance ever found. More incredibly, the probes found ice that could be used in terraforming the planet, bringing the idea of colonizing Mars even closer to becoming a reality.

As the head of a mining corporation, these minerals and ice found on Mars could make you unfathomably wealthy – if you can reach them before your competitors. You have ten rounds to send your astronauts into space, occupy the planet’s most resource-rich zones, and harvest as much celerium, sylvanite, and ice as possible. At your command is a team of nine professionals. Each has a unique skill set, from helping your astronauts traverse the Red Planet to blowing up spaceships before they launch.

In each round in Mission: Red Planet, players start by secretly deploying one of their character cards, with this card determining both when they place astronauts on the spaceships awaiting launch to Mars and which special action they take during the round. Each spaceship has a specified destination, and until an astronaut sets foot in a region, no one knows which resource they’ll find. Players collect resources (worth points) three times during the game, and they each have a secret mission card that might grant them additional points at game’s end. During the game, players might acquire an additional mission or a research card that changes the value of what awaits on Mars.

COPRA #1
IMAGE COMICS
Everything by Michel Fiffe
SERIES PREMIERE
COPRA returns in the first issue of its all-new ONGOING SERIES!
Acclaimed comics auteur MICHEL FIFFE picks up where his band of mercenary misfits left off, reintroducing the entire cast of his Suicide Squad-esque revenge machine in a brutal standoff against their own leader. Jump right into the thick of it with the world’s greatest action team in this extra-length debut milestone-36 pages for just $3.99 – ONLY $2.99 DURING ITS FIRST WEEK OF RELEASE!

Why It’s Cool: “I picked up the first issue of the original Copra in Brooklyn back in 2012. The cover grabbed me immediately; a bright, vibrant yellow on thick cardstock with that dark skull stuck through with what looked like a lightning bolt. I’d heard of Michel Fiffe at that point, probably about his sci-fi series Zegas, but I hadn’t had the opportunity to read anything by him yet. When I got back home and read the issue, I found that it had the same electricity the cover seemed to promise: classic superheroes (or villains as the case may be), but done in an art comics meets Jack Kirby DIY aesthetic. I was hooked immediately.
Like that first issue, this new series of Copra drops you right into the story and trusts you enough to catch up. Fiffe plays with pastiche characters a lot in this series, so there’s archetypes and concepts you’ll recognize immediately (The Suicide Squad, Punisher, etc) but it’s all done in a way that adds up to more than the sum of its parts. This is superheroes as only Michel Fiffe could do them, and I couldn’t be more excited for this new series.”
-Edward Uvanni, Comics Omnivore Director

Q&A with Michel Fiffe:

Tell us a little bit about Copra. How did everything come together?

Michel Fiffe: COPRA is an action team book, misfit mercenaries getting into trouble, as written and drawn in my style. It’s violent, it’s down-to-earth, it’s my love letter to the world of comics. After self-publishing and distributing 31 full-color issues and a 5 issue mini, Image Comics has absorbed the catalogue and will be publishing the continuation of the series from here on out.

What are you reading/watching/listening to as inspiration for this work?

MF: I was the last person on the planet who had never watched Game of Thrones, so I recently fixed that. Binged the entire thing in a month and loved it. It’s good to see long running serials, so to speak, being embraced, since that’s definitely the dynamic I’m working with. I doubt I’m the only one caught in that web of influence, but hey, I’ve got 5 COPRA trades to work with.

When you started this project who did you have in mind as an audience for this, and did it change by the time you finished?

MF: I would always wonder about the kind of comic book I wish existed, something I could invest in as a reader. Y’know, genre stories with a specific personality driving them. There was a readership hungry for the same thing, which I discovered as soon as I started this project. I’m nowhere near the end, either, so there’s still time for folks to get on this train.

Can you give us an idea of what readers can look forward to in this series, maybe a little down the line?

MF: There are a bunch of new characters and established plot points that are being rolled out in very specific, exciting ways. But this comic is also a product of me making one issue at a time and letting it develop organically. That’s the benefit of a long running title, it lends itself to variety and unpredictability.

What’s great in comics right now that you’re currently reading?

MF: Blubber #5, by Gilbert Hernandez (Fantagraphics), is pretty remarkable. I just bought that last week.

Which character is your favorite and why?

MF: Since I write a team book, I can say they’re *all* my fave at one point or another, but I wouldn’t do that to you. So let’s go with our main cover girl Gracie, the one running, leading the pack on. Oh, wait, did you mean favorite character of all time, like in general? Benjamin Marra’s Terror Assaulter O.M.W.O.T. hands down.
