ECBC: Comics recommendations by “Doctor Vince”! 2/20/18

“Doctor Vince” is a rocket scientist by day, and an EC Book Club (ECBC) moderator by night! EC Book Club: MARCH Book One by John Lewis is the featured book at our next ECBC meeting.

Here are the comics and graphic novels that caught his attention in this month’s Previews (in addition to his usual pull list, and EC’s picks this month!). To ensure that you get these books when they arrive, please call the store at 727-398-2665 or email our Books & New Comics Merchant, Frank, at, to reserve a copy!

From the Previews Catalog #353, February 2018 (for books arriving mainly in April 2018)…

Inside Moebius Part 2 (page 62) – I have no doubt that Jean Giraud, aka Moebius, will one day be regarded as the greatest surrealist illustrator and comics visionary of the 20th century. Dark Horse is presenting the illustrated journals from the last decade of his life in three beautiful hard cover editions. Part 1 was the mad sketchy exploration of the creator confronted by doubt and the weight of his reputation. Recommended for anyone who struggles with writers block, or is curious about where artists get their ideas.

This image from Fiore’s “5,000 km per second” is a good example of his storytelling style

Blackbird Days (page 364) – Manuele Fior is one of the best graphic novelists currently working in European comics. His stories blend sci-fi elements with what may appear, at first, to be slice-of-life stories. And yet, he weaves his words and images together to create profound emotional moments for his characters. This latest release from Fantagraphics is a collection of his short stories, ranging in subject from lost children to giant robots. Recommended for anyone wanting to try the bande dessinée style of comics.
